Skoolie Conversion: Prerequisite Projects

We are finding that converting a school bus into a tiny home presents a bunch of “prerequisite project.” You know, those pesky little projects you need to get done before you tackle the real project!

These tasks never entered my head in the planning or daydream stage, but they cost money and burn time. Not that they they are completely joyless, but I have to remind myself that the authentic part of skoolie conversion is process based.

A Driveway for the Bus

First, we needed a place to park the bus. I know that we probably could have squeezed it into the driveway but with the everlasting threat of several feet of snow, we needed a better solution.

So I rented and excavator, had some bank-run gravel brought in, and spent a day putting in a driveway extension.

Recycling a Camper

The other project involved repurposing an old truck camper I found in the free section of the want ads.

It came with a propane/AC fridge, a furnace, a stovetop, a small water tank, and some other “treasures” that we will recycle. Julie and I good-naturedly disagree on what constitutes a “treasure!”

Looks like a treasure to me! (Not so much for Julie…)

Yes, it was free, but it did cost several days of labor to salvage what we wanted, then demo the rest and haul it to the dump. I’m feeling it was worth it in the long haul toward our skoolie conversion build.
